Introduction to Guitar

(beginner students of all ages 9+)

Whether your child wants to be lead guitarist in a band, or just wants to learn to sing and play, our introduction to guitar program has what they need.

Our guitar lessons include reading music, chord theory, ear training, and improvisation.  Group classes feature a variety of activities which lay the foundation for success in music, including drumming for rhythmic development, singing for tonal development, ensemble playing, as well as theory and history to foster a complete understanding of music.

We also offer private lessons on guitar, bass and double bass.

Short Courses and Workshops:

Picking and Plucking 101

Have you ever thought of playing guitar, but don’t know where to start?
Join our 6-week crash course for beginners that will cover common concepts and topics such as structure and layout of the notes on the guitar, proper posture, right hand/left hand positions, using both fingers and picks.  Students will be introduced to reading both music and tablature.

 What to expect:

Topics will include basic chords, arpeggios, and open string phrases . This can be played with acoustic, classical and electric guitars.  The course will cover the ups and downs beginners face when learning guitar.  Each week, students will be practising simple examples from a wide variety of popular songs.
The course is open to students 10+.  It is offered either in person or on line on Fridays from 6:30 – 7:30 starting October 8th.

Picking and Plucking 201

This is a 6-week crash course for advanced beginner and early intermediate guitar players.  The course will review common concepts and topics covered in Picking and Plucking 101. Students will continue to learn reading both guitar tabs for all 6 strings and musical scores..  More advanced topics will include the C.A.G.E.D. systems and shapes, arpeggios including the Major 7th.  Each week, students will be practising examples from a wide variety of popular songs.

The course is open to students 14+.  It is offered either in person or on line on Fridays from 7:45 – 8:45 beginning October 8th.

Introduction to Guitar Care and Maintenance

This workshop is recommended for guitar players looking to care for, re-string and maintain their instrument at home.  The workshop will cover both acoustic and electric guitar maintenance.  Topics will include handling and storage, humidity and climate control, cleaning and scheduled maintenance, truss-rod adjustments, bridge and saddle adjustments, Floyd rose and locking style tremolo’s, changing strings, intonation, diagnosing neck/fret problems, basic nut filing and profiles, pick up height adjustments including both single coil and Humbucker style pick ups.  Participants will be working on their own guitars, and will need a new set of strings as well as the following tools:

  • metric and imperial Allen keys
  • 12” ruler
  • guitar tuner or app
  • Phillips and flat head screw drivers
  • side cutters
  • string winder (optional)
